visual storytelling

Humans naturally process images faster than text this is the core reason why it is imperative to convey narratives through visual media. We are in a dispensation where a lot of content has been pushed out and getting the attention of our audience can be overwhelming and demanding. With so much to consume more effort needs to be put into creating designs that can stop viewers from scrolling past your design and going through the information infused into the design that resonates with the viewer.

The goal of visual storytelling is to evoke feelings and emotions, spark interest, and most importantly, drive conversion and corresponding action. This has helped brands connect with their audience on a deeper level effectively communicate their values and get their audience to digest their information likewise, sell the brand which is the goal of every brand (to stand out and become a household name).

The importance of visual storytelling in whichever form it is being consumed whether- as video content, imagery, infographic you use, icons, or other visual elements echoes loudly.

Functions of Visual Storytelling in Branding

Drive Higher Engagements

Standing out and carving out an identity for your brand has never been more compelling and the struggle spans between creating content that speaks to your brand, resonates with your audience, is all shades of creativity, and pricks your audience’s attention to give your piece of content the attention you require and taking it a step further to spark engagement.

Visual storytelling has the potential to quickly and effectively create an emotional connection with viewers allowing business owners to communicate their message with clarity. This is the aspect where visual elements beat text which can sometimes be boring, bulky, and uninviting. Visual elements serve as powerful triggers to drive engagement.

Building Strong Emotional Connection

Brands use visual storytelling to foster trust and loyalty. This is a tool brands use to show their audience that they are authentic and can relate with them on a deeper level than beats the eyes stirring some sort of emotions intended by brands.

Simplifying Complex Messages

Pictures, infographics, videos, animations, illustrations, and graphs can provide message clarity better than plain text alone. Graphs and infographics can turn complex ideas into simple and digestible content.

Strengthening Brand Messaging

Visual storytelling helps brands capture customers’ and prospects’ attention while giving them ample room to share captivating and powerful stories about their brand by using pictures, videos, and other visual channels. They effectively and creatively portray ideas making your brand idea impactful and memorable.

Enhance Information Processing

By using videos, pictures, and audio clips pieces of information are processed faster and easier because visuals are easily relatable, recognised, and easily understood.

Boost Conversion

Conversion is the ultimate goal and visual storytelling allows brands to get creative and expressive in portraying their messages in a subtle but captivating and compelling manner. This is a tool that has increasingly become popular and is used to grab prospects’ attention and convey messages that resonate with them.

Tips for Creating a Compelling Visual Narrative

Define Your Message

The first step to take in creating a compelling visual narrative is to define what exactly the message you’re trying to pass on is. Clearly articulate the message or story you want to convey through your visuals before starting the creation process. For efficiency, reference needs to be made to your brand guidelines.

Know Your Audience

Define your audience starting from your demographics, psychographics, firmographics, and behavior.
Firmographics streamline the audience’s business composition taking into cognisance the industry in which they operate, their performance, location, and size.
Behaviour deals with having clarity on the importance of your product or service to your audience, the benefits prerequisites, and brand loyalty.
Demographics is a distinct list of where your audience is located, their age specifications, groups, status, and income margin.
Psychographics deals with their mental state just as the name implies. It is a compilation of the study or research on your target audiences, lifestyle, values, and interests.

Create a Strong Opening

Your opening should be a strong hook to keep your audience captivated and glued until the very end. a strong opening could be a question to engage your audience, fun facts, basic statistics, a compelling narrative, your vision, or your mission. A strong opening should capture their attention and set the tone for the entire narrative.

Evoke Emotions

Use visuals to evoke emotions, as an emotionally resonant story is more likely to leave a lasting impression and engagement.

Keep it Simple

Maintain viewer interest by keeping your narrative concise, clear, and void of complexities.

Pay Cogent Attention to Timing

Consider the pacing of your visual narrative, and give your audience ample time to digest and absorb each image and scene to sink into their emotions and subconscious for a better narrative experience

Create a Focal Point

Reinforce the central theme of your narrative by reinstating key elements. This helps you be in charge of your audience’s attention while guiding their minds through an intended path.

Encourage Viewer Engagement

Engagement is a key element in visual storytelling and you drive engagement by including interactive elements in your narrative. Prompts and interactive elements facilitate active engagement and participation in a story.

Balance Text and Visuals

Sometimes we get carried away and tempted to fill in our audience with too much information and fight that urge. Avoid overwhelming your audience with unnecessary information, include what is necessary, and sieve out the rest. Try to strike a balance between text and visuals.

End With Impact

Conclude your narrative with a memorable ending that is compelling enough to prompt an action that might be to engage or patronize your brand and also leave a lasting impression.

Seek Feedback

Gather feedback before finalizing your narrative to ensure it resonates effectively with different perspectives. Do not limit your feedback to just a group, having different perspectives will facilitate the creative and crafting process.

Conclusion

The art of storytelling becomes a strategic approach to branding in enacting the values we want to be conveyed, boosting conversion which is good for businesses, evoking emotion, and driving engagement as well as ensuring retention. Research shows that viewers retain about 95% of a message when they watch it visually, compared to 10% when reading it in text.
